ABILENE – To say ACU baseball has been a part of Sherri Scott-Cook's life would be an understatement.

Her dad, Al Scott ('61), played for the Wildcats, and then served a major part in reviving the program in 1991, including spearheading the construction of Crutcher Scott Field, named for his father, who served on ACU's Board of Trustees for more than 40 years.

On Saturday, a new era began with the official grand opening of the newly renovated Crutcher Scott Field at Bullock Brothers Ballpark.

"He would be wowed," said Scott-Cook ('96) about what her father would think of ACU's home field. "This is what he dreamed about. He loved the community, loved baseball and this would have made him and mom so happy to see all these people here cheering on the Wildcats. That's what they loved."

Robert Bullock ('81) played for the Wildcats, along with his late brother Joe ('80), who died in 2021. The Bullocks are ACU's only brothers to each earn regional postseason honors in the same season.

"There definitely were no backs on the seats or shade, so quite an improvement from back when I played," joked Robert about some of the new amenities that fans are now enjoying at an ACU game.

The first phase of the stadium's renovation began immediately after the 2024 season and continued into early April 2025. The Wildcats were able to play home games as scheduled beginning in February while construction was completed.

The Autrey Family Pavilion – an open-air pavilion roof along the first-base line – greets fans when they step off the elevator or stairway.  It also provides shade for the new chair-backed seats. New artificial turf was installed over winter break and LED lights brighten the playing surface at night.

On the first floor below the stands, the Wessel Family Player Development Center houses the team's new locker room and the McCaleb and Miller Team Room, along with the Bourland Family Classroom, coaching offices and a founder's suite. The Mabee Courtyard offers an open space to enjoy the game down the right field line.

"This field isn't just where baseball is played – it's sacred ground," Scott-Cook said during a pregame ceremony. "It's where faith meets purpose. It's where young men grow not just as athletes but as followers of Jesus."

Scott-Cook and Bullock both threw out ceremonial first pitches before the Wildcats took on Utah Tech on Saturday. The day gave them a chance to reflect on their family members – the stadium's namesakes – who have passed, and what they'd think of what ACU's stadium now looks like.

"I've thought many times about that," said Robert Bullock. "Joe loved baseball. I think he is here today. He's probably watching from the best seat in the house. Joe would be very proud of what we've accomplished."

"Though our parents are no longer with us, we still feel their presence here at the ballpark," said Scott-Cook. "Their legacy lives on – not just as a name on the field, but in the spirit of this program, in the culture of faith and excellence and in the lives this program and this place impact."
