ABILENE - Abilene Christian women's golf captured the team championship and
Ryann Honea won the individual crown as heavy winds brought a premature end to the West Texas Classic on Tuesday. Unplayable conditions at the Abilene Country Club forced the program's inaugural tournament's first two rounds to go down as the final score.
The Wildcats carded a 21-over 581 to claim the top spot in the 16-team field, finishing 12 strokes ahead of second-place Tarleton State. Honea wrapped up the tournament as the only golfer to finish under par at 2-under 138, five strokes ahead of the Texans' runner-up Darianys Guzman at 3-over 143.
ACU has finished in the top 10 of each of its six tournaments played this season with two top-three placements. It's the Wildcats' first team title since the ORU Spring Invitational in 2024, their third championship of their inaugural campaign.
The 99th-ranked college golfer in the nation per Clippd, Honea led the field with eight birdies and just four bogeys. On Monday, she logged the first round's lowest score at 3-under 67 before firing a 1-over 71 in a second round in which no one finished below par.
After just one bogey in the first round, Honea responded well to her errors in the second round. She rebounded from consecutive bogeys on holes 3 and 4 with birdies on 5 and 7, then followed a bogey and a double bogey with two straight birdies on 14 and 15.
It's Honea's fifth career individual title at ACU and her second in a row after she tied for first at the BGSU Women's Intercollegiate on Feb. 11-12. She previously earned the individual championship at the 2024 Western Athletic Conference Championship.Â
Kate Pickrell finished in a tie for fourth place after carding a 5-over 145. She bounced back from a 5-over 75 effort in the first round with an even-par 70 showing in Round 2. It's the best finish of Pickrell's career and her second-ever top-10 performance.
Manon Guille was the final Wildcat in the top 10, joining Honea as the only two golfers to record a score under par in Round 1 at 1-under 69. Her 8-over 78 raised her showing to 7-over 147 but kept her in eighth place. Guille had the second-most birdies with seven and the third-least bogeys at seven. She played into the top 10 for the third time in her career.
Marissa Loya,
Julia Vollmer and
Jiyu Han each tied for 11th place at 9-over 149, with Loya and Han logging identical round scores of 3-over 73 and 6-over 76. Vollmer joined Pickrell in working a five-stroke improvement between rounds, from 7-over 77 to 2-over 72. Competing in her third collegiate tournament, Loya notched her best finish.
Jasmine Do tied for 24th place and
Sydney Williams tied for 27th to round out the action for ACU. Do competed as an individual with Guille and Han and earned her best career finish in her third tournament.
The Wildcats are back in action on Monday and Tuesday at the Riverbend Intercollegiate, hosted by Houston Christian at the Riverbend Country Club in Sugar Land, Texas.
