Box Score ABILENE - Abilene Christian women's tennis couldn't hold onto an early lead as it dropped a 4-3 decision to New Mexico at the Teague Center on Friday afternoon. Coming off a pair of match cancellations, the Wildcats fell to 2-7.
Olivia Sears and
Maria Cascos won their third doubles match in a row with a 6-3 victory over Maria Matsoukatidi and Sofia Taborga. Then, the tandem of
Masha Vrsalovic and
Alice Klinteby earned a 6-1 win against Rebekkah Gaines and Maria Sodre to secure the doubles point for ACU.
Cascos and Klinteby continued their momentum as they each captured singles victories. Cascos notched her third consecutive win as she took down reigning Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Week Matsoukatidi, 6-4, 7-5, and Klinteby beat Sodre, 6-1, 6-1. Sodre had won her previous three singles matchups.
The Lobos secured the remaining four singles matches, though, to lock up the victory. Maud Vandeputte improved to 7-0 in singles this season as she beat Sears, 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-2, and Taborga won her fourth in a row by dealing a 6-3, 7-5 defeat to
Jess Board.
Gaines beat Vrsalovic at the No. 1 spot, while Sarah O'Connor defeated Del Campo, 6-4, 6-4, to clinch the New Mexico victory. The Lobos are coming off their first Mountain West regular season title in program history.
ACU returns to the Teague Center on March 2 to host Wichita State at 12 p.m.
