Honea finishes second, Wildcats sixth in the Boilermaker Classic

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — After a final round of action at Kampen Golf Course, the Wildcats finished sixth in a field of fifteen while Ryann Honea completed the tournament second overall in the individual standings. 

Among ACU in the field of fifteen included host Purdue, who won the tournament and boasted individual champion Natasha Kiel. Other teams in the field were Minnesota, Kent State, Indiana and Western Kentucky, who tied for fourth, Alabama in seventh, Old Dominion, Michigan, Georgia Southern, Notre Dame, North Florida Ball State, Xavier and James Madison. 

"This was a really exciting week for ACU women's golf," head coach Rob Bennett said. "When we built our schedule, we knew it would be tough, but we also knew we would have a chance to showcase our skill against some of the best teams in the country. We did that this week beating multiple Power 4 schools."

In the first round, ACU finished tied in fourth with Notre Dame shooting nine strokes over par. Honea finished the first round tied for fifth, shooting right at the 72 stroke par. 

As for the second round, the Wildcats moved down the standings and finished the second round tied in fifth place alongside Minnesota, with the top teams above them being host Purdue, Kent State, Indiana and Western Kentucky. Meanwhile, Honea shot three strokes under par, giving her a narrow lead heading into the third and final round on Tuesday. 

The final round saw improvements from ACU all around, with all Wildcats shooting under 80 strokes in the final round of action. Honea and freshman Julia Vollmer finished the final round at par at 72. With the performance, the Wildcats were able to stay in the top half of the field, and Honea was able to secure second place overall individually after Kiel shot four under par on her home course in the final round. Overall, Honea finished shooting three under par for the weekend. 

As for the rest of the Wildcats playing in West Lafayette, Julia Vollmer and Kate Pickrell finished in 30th shooting, 13 over par, Manon Guille finished tied for 57th shooting, 19 over par, and Jiyu Han finished in 62nd, shooting 21 strokes over par through the weekend. 

"I am proud of our team for battling at a really difficult golf course and showing that we can compete at a high level at a venue that has hosted numerous NCAA Regionals," Bennett said.
