ACU quarterback threw for 506 yards against Texas Tech
ABILENE - Following an incredible return trip to Texas Tech that nearly ended with the ACU Wildcats upsetting the heavily favored Red Raiders, quarterback Maverick McIvor has been named the Stats Perform FCS National Offensive Player of the Week.
McIvor threw for a career-high 506 yards, while completing 36-of-51 passes and three touchdowns on Saturday, Aug. 31.
He became just the third player in ACU history to pile up 500 passing yards in a single game. McIvor also tied Mitchell Gale for the second highest total in a single game.
ACU Sports Network color commentator Jim Reese holds the school record with 564 yards in a 1976 game against Angelo State. Gale threw for 506 yards during a 2011 Division II playoff match-up with Washburn.
But McIvor's performance came against Texas Tech -- a Big 12 opponent, and the same school where he started his college career. The San Angelo Central High School graduate spent his first three seasons at Texas Tech, but never played in a game for the Red Raiders.
McIvor returned to Lubbock on Saturday night and, with several other former Tech players now on ACU's offense with him, led touchdown drives from 80, 75, 75, 96, 62, and 75 yards away.
ACU's final drive in regulation started with 2:39 remaining at its own 25-yard line. McIvor pushed the Wildcats down to the Tech 4-yard line where Ritse Vaes kicked a 21-yard field goal with 0:05 left to tie the score at 45-all and send the game to overtime.
Isaiah Johnson's TD run matched Texas Tech's opening score in OT, and then ACU decided to go for the winning 2-point conversion but was stopped short.
McIvor and ACU play their first home of the season on Saturday, Sept. 7 against West Georgia. Kick-off is at 7 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
