ABILENE — Abilene Christian begins the 2024 volleyball season on August 24, starting the team's journey in aiming to earn its first Western Athletic Conference title. The schedule includes a second-straight home tournament, three road tournaments and eight home conference matchups.
The road tournaments include appearances in the Baylor Classic in Waco, the UTSA Invitational in San Antonio and the Borderland Invitational in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
"We are so excited to release our 2024 schedule," said head coach Ijeoma Moronu Alstrup. "We have a solid group of returners coming back and some great talent in our freshman class as well as our Big 10 Conference transfer Sasha Stotler. The returners put in a lot of work this spring semester to begin to create a new culture for the program and I'm excited for them to see the fruition of that hard work."
The season officially begins on Aug. 24 on the road at longtime Div. II and Lone Star Conference rival Angelo State.
Then the Wildcats continue on the road to their first tournament of the season at the Baylor Classic on Aug. 30-31, with matches set against Baylor, Campbell University and Tulsa. Next, the program heads to San Antonio for the UTSA Invitational September 6-7, with games against Incarnate Word and Holy Cross. To end the road tournaments, the Wildcats head to Las Cruces, N.M., for the Borderland Invitational. Matches in that tournament include a face-off against host and former WAC rival New Mexico State, Texas Southern and Arizona.
"We have some big programs on our schedule such as Baylor, Arizona, Tulsa, just to name a few." Moronu Alstrup said. "These are the types of programs we want to become one day. We are looking to be challenged, to grow, and to be fully prepared for the WAC once conference season begins."
The Wildcats will begin their home schedule during the Wildcat Classic on September 19-20. The tournament for the Wildcats begins with a 7 p.m. matchup on Sept. 19 against Alabama A&M, followed by a game against Oral Roberts on Sept. 20 at 6 p.m.
Following the Wildcat Classic, ACU begins its WAC schedule, which starts with a road trip to Utah. The Wildcats first play Utah Tech in St. George on Sept. 26 and then Southern Utah in Cedar City on Sept. 28.
To start October, the Wildcats return to the Big Country for four games, three at home and one in Stephenville. To start the home conference schedule, ACU faces California Baptist on Oct. 3, followed by a match against Seattle U on Oct. 5. The Cats then go to Stephenville on Oct. 10 to take on Big Country rival Tarleton State, then return home on Oct. 12 and play UT Arlington.
Following their Big Country stand, the Wildcats head toward the West Coast for the first time in the 2024 season. They take on Utah Valley in Provo, Utah on Oct. 17 and then head to Seattle to take on Seattle U on Oct. 19.
The remainder of the October schedule will be in Moody Coliseum. The Wildcats' homestand includes an Oct. 24 game against Utah Tech, an Oct. 28 match against Tarleton State and an Oct. 31 game against reigning WAC tournament champion, Grand Canyon.
To start the month of November, ACU takes a quick trip to Arlington on Nov. 4 to finish the season series against UTA. Then ACU plays at Moody Coliseum for the final time in 2024, with matches against Utah Valley on Nov. 7 and Southern Utah on Nov. 9.
To end the 2024 regular season, ACU heads west again, taking on Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Arizona on Nov. 14 and will finish the season in Riverside on Nov. 16 against California Baptist.
The Western Athletic Conference Tournament will take place close to home, with the tournament being hosted by UT Arlington. The tournament will run from November 21-23 at the College Park Center in Arlington.
"We hope that you will join us in Moody for opening weekend Sept. 19-20 for the Wildcat Classic and support the girls throughout the semester. There is something really special happening with ACU volleyball and we want you to be a part of it."
