PAYSON, Ariz. – Abilene Christian moved up to fifth place on its final round of the season at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday.
ACU shot a final round of 293 after a strong start.
"We got just the start we wanted this morning and we were seven under after three holes," said ACU Head Coach
Tom Shaw. "We were in great position but just had a really tough middle of the round where we struggled. The guys made some valiant attempts at a comeback but in the end we weren't able to make enough birdies. I'm proud of the effort that these guys gave being the seventh seed at the start and finishing top five."
Charlie Jackson and
Trenton Johnson tied for 14th after three rounds. Jackson was two under on Sunday with birdies on holes 2, 3, 12, 14 and 16. He went 76-75-70 for 221 and five over par. Johnson had rounds of 73, 75 and 73 with birdies Sunday on holes 2, 3, 8, 10 and 14. Both Jackson and Lewis had nine birdies for the tournament.

Heusel shot 76 on Sunday with birdies on one, two, four and five to finish with 10 on the tournament. His rounds of 76-71-76 saw him tied for 18th at seven over (223).
Preston Cooper tied for 24th at 225 (nine over) with rounds of 77, 74 and 74. He had final-round birdies on holes two, seven, 11 and 14 to bring his tournament total to six.

The tournament ends the season and the college careers of Heusel and Jackson.
"I especially want to recognize
Zane Heusel and
Charlie Jackson, our graduating seniors who gave so much to the program," Shaw said. "Both players will be in the record books for years to come. We will miss their contributions to ACU Golf."
