Heusel Ties ACU, WAC Records with 63

KERRVILLE, Texas – Abilene Christian's Zane Heusel finished The Big Texan with a school and Western Athletic Conference record round as the Wildcats placed second as a team.
 
Heusel, a senior from Edmond, Oklahoma, fired a final round of 63 with two eagles and six birdies to tie the ACU record shared by Alex Clouse and Alex Carpenter. Clouse shot a 63 in the third round of the La Tour Intercollegiate in 2019-20. Carpenter also recorded his 63 in round three of the SoCal Intercollegiate Championship in 2012-13.
 
Heusel tied the WAC record held by Tulsa's David Inglis in 2002.
 
Heusel's previous best also was in the Big Texan in 2021 when he shot a 65 in the second round.
 
In Tuesday's final round, Heusel had his first eagle on the 548-yard, par-5 fourth hole. His second was another par-5, the 490-yard 14th hole. Heusel also had birdies on holes 8, 10, 12, 13, 16 and 18 to finish nine under par. He finished the tournament with 13 birdies.
 
Heusel finished in a tie for fifth after rounds of 71 and 79 on Monday.
 
Heusel wasn't alone in producing an impressive final round for the Wildcats. Grégoire Hoyeau fired a 67 and Preston Cooper had a 69 as an individual. As a team, ACU finished with a round of 273, which tied for the sixth-lowest team round in ACU history.
 
Hoyeau birdied holes 4, 10, 12, 15 and 16 on Tuesday and parred the other 13 holes. He finished the tournament with 10 birdies. Hoyeau placed 11th with rounds of 75, 73 and 67.
 
Cooper had four birdies in the final round, going one under par on 4, 8, 14 and 15. He finished in a tie for 31st at 222 on rounds of 78-75-69 with nine birdies.
 
Charlie Jackson finished in a tie for 27th at 223 on rounds of 73-75-73. He had birdies on 14 and 16 and finished the last day with a 73. He ended up with eight birdies for the tournament.
 
Thomas Buisson also was under par in round three, shooting a 70. He had a strong back nine with birdies on 9, 14, 15 and 16. He finished tied for 36th at 223, going 76-77-70. He had nine birdies for the tournament.
 
Brian Comegys' final round of 75 included birdies on 14 and 17 to bring his tourney total to six. He had two rounds of 74 on Monday and tied Buisson for 36th at 223.
 
ACU returns to action April 8-9 at Nichols' Koasati Pines Intercollegiate.
