ABILENE – Abilene Christian's first-ever NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships awaits her Saturday event in Albuquerque.
Ella Anttila, a junior from Helsinki, Finland, represents ACU in the triple jump on Saturday as one of the top 16 competitors on the college level in that event.
It's a significant moment for both the athlete and the program, but Anttila hopes to accomplish more than just participate.
"It's always been my dream to make it to an NCAA national meet and I'm so happy that it finally came true," Anttila said. "Even though I've achieved one of my career goals in qualifying for this meet, I haven't lost sight of the opportunity to perform and represent ACU on the national stage. I'm excited to give it my all and to soak it all in."
Anttila hit her qualifying mark on the penultimate opportunity to do so, clearing 43 feet, 7 inches. The WAC event championship, ACU school record and the NCAA qualifying mark all became hers when she exited the pit.
Anttila had to wait a few more days as last-chance meets offered competitors a chance to join the group of 16 and though she fell a few places to 13th, she was well within the bracket.
"I am so excited to see Ella compete at the indoor national championships this Saturday," said ACU Head Coach Jerrod Cook. "This is an incredible opportunity that we know she has worked so hard for and so grateful to see her compete on this stage."
The triple jump launches at 3:45 p.m., Mountain time, from the Albuquerque Convention Center. ESPN+ will stream the event live.
