FORT WORTH – Abilene Christian's
Paula Garrote scored a split-set win in sixth singles at TCU on Sunday after the Wildcats had taken a pair of matches from San Francisco in the morning.
The Wildcats lost both matches by 6-1 counts.
"Overall, I'd say we got better today, even if we didn't get the wins," said ACU Head Coach Bryan Rainwater.
Olivia Sears had a strong outing against the Dons, scoring a line three singles win, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 over Hana Gamracy after teaming up with
Masha Vrsalovic for a No. 1 doubles win.
"We were really competitive all the way down against San Francisco," said ACU Head Coach Bryan Rainwater. "We came out a little slow in doubles but picked it up and had good energy and competed the rest of doubles and throughout singles. Olivia continues to play extremely well and worked her tail off. We moved
Masha Vrsalovic to No. 1 and it really worked out."
Garrote outlasted Margaret Polk of TCU. After winning the opening set, 6-2, Garrote took Polk to a tiebreaker in the second set before falling, 6-7 (7-4). After falling behind in the third set, 5-3, Garrote dug deep and scored a 10-6 win.
"I think that's the best we've played TCU in my three years here," said Rainwater. "We've gotten a doubles point before but I don't think we've played a better match against TCU all the way through as we did today. We really fought hard."
ACU, now 4-5 on the season, hosts three matches over the upcoming weekend. The Wildcats play New Mexico on Friday, Lamar on Saturday and Tyler Junior College on Saturday.
