ACU pitchers rack up 11 strikeouts in doubleheader against UIW

ABILENE, Texas – The ACU softball team hosted former conference foe UIW on Tuesday afternoon, falling 3-1 in the opener before dropping the nightcap 5-4. Wildcat pitchers Sidney Holman-Mansell, Riley White, and Laurén Schiek combined for a total of 11 strikeouts in the circle.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game 1
  • The Cardinals scratched across two runs in the top of the first to take an early lead, but a sac fly off the bat of Sidney Kaiser brought ACU within one.
  • A solo home run in the top of the sixth put UIW in front 3-1 and provided the final run of the opener.
  • Holman-Mansell went the distance in the circle for the Purple and White in Game 1, fanning six batters while inducing 10 groundouts.

Game 2
  • A pair of hits and an ACU error allowed UIW to take a 2-0 first inning lead for the second straight game, and a solo home run to open the third made it a 3-0 game.
  • Two more Cardinal runs crossed the plate in the top of the fifth, and the visitors looked poised to pull away, but the Wildcats had other plans.
  • Matti Reiling and Callie Burris were each hit by a pitch to begin the home sixth, and the Wildcats got on the board with a double from Avery Miloch.
  • Four UIW errors helped ACU make it a one-run game in the home seventh, but the tying run was thrown out at third base, allowing the Cardinals to escape with their second victory of the afternoon.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Mercedes Eichelberger has now reached base in 10 straight games, matching ACU's longest streak of the 2021 campaign.
  • Holman-Mansell has now has now picked up at least six strikeouts in four consecutive outings and has done so in eight appearances this spring.
  • Miloch leads the team with 13 RBI, while White's three hits on Tuesday helped her season batting average jump to .462.

ON DECK:
  • The Wildcats return to action on Friday, when they head to Beaumont to take on Lamar for a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m., with the series set to wrap up with one game on Saturday afternoon.
