ABILENE, Texas – The ACU football team is headed to Huntsville this weekend to take on Sam Houston in the final road trip of the regular season. The Wildcats have already matched their best win total in the D1 era and can take another step toward an automatic playoff berth with a win over the streaking Bearkats.

The Wildcats: (6-3, 3-0 WAC)
  • ACU went to Stephenville last week to take on Tarleton in the Interstate 20 Rivalry, scoring a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull off a 28-23 victory. The Wildcats have now outscored opponents 90-34 in the final quarter this fall.
  • On ACU's first offensive play from scrimmage, Davion Johnson turned a short pass into an 80-yard house call, and he now has ACU's two longest plays this season following a 91-yard kickoff return a week prior.
  • Quarterback Maverick McIvor had arguably his best game to date as a collegiate player, completing 24 of his 34 attempts for 385 yards and a trio of scores while spreading the ball around to eight different targets. McIvor's single-game yardage total is the highest for the Purple and White since Dallas Sealey in 2016.
  • Tristan Golightly and Kobe Clark went for 117 and 115 yards apiece, with the latter hauling in two touchdown grabs to climb up the Wildcat record books. It marked ACU's first game with two 100-yard receivers since Cedric Gilbert and Carl Whitley combined for 222 yards against McNeese back on Halloween of 2015.
  • Safety Elijah Moffett has taken over the team lead in tackles with 41.0 after recording eight last Saturday against the Texans. Tory Hargrove (38.0), Tyrin Bradley (37.0) and Abner Dubar (36.0) are on his heels, and the season leader has now changed in four consecutive weeks.

The Bearkats (5-2, no conference due to impending move to FBS)
  • After scoring just three combined points in the first two games of the season, Sam Houston has been rolling since, picking up five straight wins with an average of 25.4 points per game in that span.
  • The Bearkats were off last weekend but defeated Tarleton 40-21 the previous Saturday behind a monster day on the ground. Zach Hrbacek led the way with 203 yards and a pair of scores, while Dezmon Jackson, Keegan Shoemaker and Tony Williams helped Sam Houston clear the 300-yard mark as a team.
  • Sophomore linebacker Kavian Gaither was all over the field against the Texans, racking up 12 tackles and forcing a fumble in a dominant effort.
  • Sam Houston's defense has been one of the best in the nation so far this fall, coming away with timely stop after timely stop. The most notable of those came in the Battle of the Piney Woods on October 1, when the Bearkats stopped SFA with an interception to prevent the Jacks from setting up a game-winning field goal.

The Series
  • ACU and Sam Houston are tied at 13-13-1 in the all-time series, with the Wildcats claiming a slight 8-7 edge in Huntsville.
  • Last season, the Bearkats came to Abilene as the defending National Champions and defeated the Wildcats 35-9.
  • Abilene Christian's last trip to Huntsville came in 2018, when the Purple and White pulled off the 17-10 upset.
