ABILENE - Aninna Brandenburg is back on the national stage for the Wildcats as she prepares to compete in the 2021 Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. this weekend. Coming off an 11th place finish in the discus at the NCAA West Prelims, Brandenburg just secured a place at nationals as the top 12 competitors from the prelims advanced. This is not new territory for the senior as she competed at nationals in 2019 where she took home a 15th-place finish and All-American honors with a throw of 176-5.
I’m really excited. It’s one of those things that it’s hard to believe that it’s been two years since we have been in this situation, just having this opportunity is exciting. I love to see our athletes reach their potential and help one another reach that next level of competition. It's awesome that we get to share this journey on the national stage.Head coach, Jerrod Cook on Brandenburg returning to nationals
I knew I had a good performance, so seeing that I actually finished in 11th place to return to nationals was exciting. Going to nationals depends on just that one day, not how you or others have thrown in the past, so it's exciting to know that you were able to excel in that moment to move on to the next level.Brandenburg on her performance at regionals
Brandenburg will be one of 24 individuals competing in the discus at historic Hayward Field this Saturday. She has utilized a relaxed but consistent schedule to help her prepare for the weekend. It is not her first trip to the national stage and she is thankful that she had that experience to prepare her for another chance to find success at the highest level.
Brandenburg will compete in the discus on Saturday afternoon with the event beginning at 4:35 p.m. and streaming online through ESPN3. You can use the links above to follow along online or keep up to date through the ACU Track and Field Twitter @ACU_TFXC.
Staying loose but still having a schedule has been important. I am still taking a class, working out and practicing daily, but it is a more relaxed schedule than during the regular season. I think that helps with me being ready to compete at this level again as well. My past performances don't matter, I have to go out there and give it my best effort to have another successful trip.Brandenburg on preparing for nationals
