4/22/2021 6:59:00 AM | Track & Field
ABILENE -- Abilene Christian's Oliver Jackson Twilight meet Wednesday proved to be a showcase for the hometown Wildcats as the two teams combined to win an astounding 13 events. Junior Megan Kirby led the victory parade with wins in the 100m hurdles and long jump.
Kirby clocked a lifetime best of 13.87 seconds in the sprint hurdles to remain the Wildcats' eighth-ranked all-time performer in this event, but she also became the first Wildcat since Lexus Williams in 2012 to run a time under 14.00 seconds. Kirby later won the long jump with a distance of 5.89 meter (19 feet - 04 inches) to edge runner-up teammate Payton Kirk by a mere two centimeters (.75 inches).
Ten of the Wildcats' 13 victories came on the track at Elmer Gray Stadium, and following Kirby's triumph in the hurdles the Wildcats' claimed additional titles in the men's 100m (Jared Williams, 10.58), 200m (Jack Marshall, 21.23) and 400m (Avery Williams, 47.15), plus the women's 400m hurdles where Janae Phoenix ran a PR of 1:01.22.
ACU collected a total of 16 personal record performances and saw meet record of 40.22 seconds set by its sprint relay team of Le'Gari Daniels, Avery Williams, Marshall and Addison Franklin.
The Wildcats' continued to excel during the meet's distance carnival as they swept the men's and women's titles in the 1,500m and 3,000m steeplechase.
Irene Rono, the reigning Southland Conference Athlete of the Week, won her collegiate 1,500m debut in 4:42.84, while Maxwel Kiplagat took first in his race behind a time of 4:02.13.
Denis Lagat set a meet record in the steeplechase with his mark of 9:30.88, and Briahna Gerlach defended her Oliver Jackson steeplechase crown by completing the course in 11:10.16.
In the field, additional wins were earned by Zoe Spinn in the high jump (1.72m / 5-07.75) and Tyler Richardson in the shot put (17.24m / 56-06.75). Richardson has won his last two shot put outings, and earlier Wednesday he was voted Southland Conference Field Athlete of the Week based on his performance at Baylor's Michael Johnson Invitational.
The Wildcats return to action Friday, April 30 for the start of the two-day Corky / Crofoot Shootout hosted by Texas Tech.
