WTEN rallies to beat Lamar, 4-3

ABILENE -- Abilene Christian scored an important 4-3 Southland Conference win over Lamar Sunday at the Eager Tennis Center. The win lifted the Wildcats' overall and conference records to 10-10 and 5-3, while the Cardinals slipped to 7-5 and 4-3.

ACU won its sixth doubles point in conference play as both the No. 1 and 2 duos of  Nini Memishishi/Ileana Mocciola and  Allison Stewart/Claire Fisher each improved to 4-0 on the year. The No. 1s, Memishishi and Mocciola, doubled up Bianca Vitale/Alba Perez, 6-3, and Stewart/Fisher topped Natalia Molina and Elena Rodriguez, 6-4.

Stewart and Fisher again were winners in singles. Fisher at No. 6, defeated Emmeline Polevoi, 7-5, 6-1, while Stewart provided the match-clinching point at No. 3, beating Alba Perez in comeback fashion 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to snap a 3-3 tie. In between, ACU received its third point at No. 5 from Andrea Guerrero, who beat Ana Jolic 6-3, 6-2 for her sixth conference win of the spring.

"I'm proud of the whole team .... we were really good today; they're competing," said Director of Tennis Juan Nunez. "Any 4-3 win is a war, and it all came down to the last match which could have gone either way but we felt confident with Allison being there with the score tied 3-3. We knew she was going to battle and do whatever she had to do to win." 

The Wildcats match at Incarnate Word scheduled for this Saturday, April 3 has been postponed. Nunez said he will try to reschedule. ACU's next road trip takes the Wildcats to Central Arkansas and Northwestern State from April 9-11.
