ABILENE --- Abilene Christian women's tennis won its 10th consecutive match (since 2010) against its regional rivals from Tarleton State Friday afternoon at the Eager Tennis Center, 5-2.
The Wildcats improved to 2-5 with the win while the Texans fells to 2-4.
ACU started the match with its second straight doubles point and third in five matches, winning at the No. 2 and 3 lines by scores of 6-2 and 6-1. Singles points, however, were tougher to earn as the Wildcats lost at No. 2 and 3 and were pushed to a third set at No. 6, where sophomore
Claire Fisher rallied to beat Faustine Palatte, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
No. 1 senior Nini Memishshi also battled to hold off Mihaela Codreanu, 7-5, 6-2, while junior
Allison Stewart won at No. 4 over Celia Vaudiau, 6-0, 6-2, and senior
Ileana Mocciola topped Rose Watanabe, 6-2, 6-4.
"I'm really proud of the girls beating a tough Tarleton team," said Director of Tennis Juan Nunez. "Tarleton is going to fight and make you earn it, and we did. We have a lot to learn even in victory because that team exposed us a little bit as far as energy goes. They came in here believing they were going to take this win from us, but credit to our girls for staying tough and getting it done. We got down in a couple matches, but came back to win them in the end."
The Wildcats return to action Saturday with a 10 a.m. dual vs. UT Permian Basin.
