ABILENE - Senior Alex Clouse and junior Francisco Osio were ACU Golf's clubhouse leaders this week at the 18-team Border Olympics in Laredo, tying for 29th place (out of 95 competitors). They were two of eight athletes who finished at 9-over 225.
Senior Chase Allison finished one stroke behind them at 10-over 226, while sophomore Zane Heusel and junior Brian Choe finished at 13 and 14-over, respectively, at the Wildcats' spring season opener that was attended by four nationally ranked programs from Baylor, Kent State, Texas and Texas A&M.
Allison recorded the team's lone eagle as he carded a three on the par-5 ninth hole during Monday's first round. ACU was the fourth-best team on Par 5s this week, averaging 4.85 strokes (-9), and had three birdies on No. 9 to close Tuesday's final round.
ACU finished 11th as a team (+38, 902) which was good enough to defeat Michigan (+39), Louisiana (+40), Rice (+50) and Southland Conference rivals Lamar (+61) and Houston Baptist (+75).
The 26th-ranked Aggies won the team title led by individual medalist Dan Erikson (4-under 212) and were the only ones in the field to finish below par at 2-under 862. The ninth-ranked Longhorns earned runner-up honors but still finished eight strokes behind their archrivals.
Next up for the Wildcats is the 11th annual Cabo Collegiate at TPC San Antonio Mar. 1-3. The three-day event, which is being held stateside for the first time, will be played on the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio – the same course the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open is played on.
ACU's competition there includes Arizona and Arizona State, Arkansas (host school), Baylor, Cal, Florida State, Houston, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, Rice, Stanford, Texas and Texas A&M, Texas Tech and UTSA.
