WTEN welcomes Wichita State Wednesday

ABILENE - Abilene Christian women's tennis continues its busy week with a Wednesday matinee dual vs. Wichita State. First serve between the Wildcats and Shockers is set for 1:30 p.m. on the outdoor courts of the Eager Tennis Center; however, the afternoon high is only expected to reach 55 degrees.

The Shockers, who defeated the Wildcats last season in Stillwater, Okla., 6-1, are off to a 3-5 start in 2021, while the Wildcats come in with a 3-7 record following Sunday's losses to Texas Tech (4-0) and New Mexico (4-3). Points vs. the Lobos were earned by Nini Memishshi, Sylvia Viljoen and the Wildcats' No. 1 and 2 doubles teams (Ileana Mocciola / Claire Fisher and Allison Stewart / Sylvia Viljoen), but that all-important match-clinching point proved elusive.

"New Mexico was the favorite on paper but it hurt not getting that one," said Director of Tennis Juan Nunez. "We should have won being up in a few sets, however, we straight up ran out of gas. The positive though is that we put ourselves into some good tough situations heading into Wednesday and the start of conference play."

Earlier Sunday ACU was bested 4-0 by Texas Tech. The Wildcats' No. 3 doubles team of Memishshi and Maryjoe Crisologo defeated Metka Komac and Bojana Marinkov, 6-2, but fell short at No. 2 where Olivia Peet and Margarita Skriabina edged Allison Stewart and Viljoen in a tiebreakers, 7-6 (6).

Stewart again came close to winning ACU a point in singles, but her match was stopped with the junior up a set 6-3, 5-3.

"Overall I'm happy with how we competed against stronger teams," said Nunez, "even though we barely practiced for close to 9-10 days because of the extreme cold weather."

Later this weekend ACU begins Southland Conference play Friday and Sunday with matches at McNeese and Southeastern Louisiana. Match times are set for 1 p.m. and 11 a.m. in Lake Charles and Hammond, La., respectively.
