WTEN finds time for Tech twinbill Sunday

ABILENE - Abilene Christian women's tennis canceled its Friday home match vs. Southwestern but is still planning to play against Texas Tech and New Mexico Sunday in Lubbock. Match times are set for 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the team is expected to leave the Key City Saturday night as temperatures rise into the 40s and 50s.

Director of Tennis Juan Nunez said his student-athletes are all doing okay despite being scattered across town and unable to practice due to the freezing cold temperatures that have affected the state's power, water and gas supplies. Nunez' wife, former ACU basketball alumna Shelby (Shipley) Nunez, and their children are safe with family members in Burnet, Texas. Nunez, meanwhile, has stayed close to campus to make sure his players' needs are being met.

Sunday's contests will be the women's first duals since sweeping a Feb. 5-6 homestand from Tarleton State (5-2) and UT Permian Basin (7-0) that lifted their overall record to 3-5. The Wildcats will be home again this coming Wednesday for a match vs. Wichita State.

Texas Tech already has had four early season matches either postponed or canceled and the Red Raiders come into this Sunday with an overall record of 4-1. Tech's last win was a 4-3 decision over Arizona State on Feb. 13.

New Mexico is 2-0 with wins coming against DII Metro State (5-2) and CSU Pueblo (7-0).

ACU's men's team is not slated to play until the weekend of March 6 and 7 when the Wildcats visit Rice and UTSA.
