1/27/2021 3:23:00 PM | Track & Field
ABILENE - Senior Megan Kirby and junior Jonathan 'JJ' Ply will be in action Friday and Saturday for the Texas Tech Invitational & Multis.
The entire pentathlon will be contested Friday starting at 11:20 a.m., while the heptathlon will be split across both days. The 60m dash, long jump, shot put and high jump will be held Friday beginning at 11 a.m., while Saturday's slate of events (sprint hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run) starts at 10 a.m.
Kirby became ACU's program record holder in the pentathlon last March after scoring 3,781 points at the Southland Conference Championships to place fifth. Her point total broke a 10-year-old school record previously held by Jessica Withrow (3,653 points).
Kirby also ranks No. 2 all-time at ACU in the sprint hurdles (8.70 seconds), shares the outdoor long jump record with Hall of Famer Mazel Thomas (20-7.25 / 6.28m) and is No. 3 in the heptathlon with 5,063 points.
This will be Kirby's and Ply's second appearances at Texas Tech in three weeks as they also were entered in the Jan. 16 Corky Classic. Kirby ran an 8.85 in the 60m hurdles and reached respective distances of 5-2.25 (1.58m) and 18-9 (5.71m) in the high and long jumps.
Ply, who redshirted in 2020 for ACU after transferring from Central Arizona, made his Wildcat debut in the pole vault and reached a height of 14-8.75 (4.49m).
In 2019, Ply was the NJCAA heptathlon national champion and Indoor National Male Field Athlete of the Meet. The previous year (2018) he was the NJCAA decathlon national champion. He came to ACU with a 5,350 PR in the heptathlon and a 7,131 in the decathlon. Both these marks would rank him among ACU's all-time top-10 performers.
