ABILENE – The ACU soccer team used 24 players, tried a variety of formations, and got contributions from new faces Sunday night in its exhibition win over the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern. The Wildcats saw goals scored from five different players in their tune-up to the regular-season opener next Friday at New Mexico State. ACU scored eight times in the second half to win 9-0.
The Goals:
- Freshman
Caylen Wright scored her first of two goals in the 36th minute, and would go on to add one late the second half as well.
- Redshirt sophomore
Emily Heidman got the second half started in style with a score off a brilliant pass from
Samantha Vestal.
- Junior
Christina Arteaga tallied a pair of goals, scoring in the 49th minute off a penalty kick.
- Arteaga added her second less than a minute later on a breakaway score.
- Sophomore
Laura Mauldin made it 5-0 ACU with a score in the 62nd minute.
- Freshman
Jordan Michie recorded a hat trick Sunday, with the first goal coming in the 75th minut, unassisted.
- Wright added her second of the night on an assist from fellow freshman
Natalie Jones.
- Michie scored on a wonderful pass from rookie Calie Catalano, with a header coming from
Isa Sanabria. The ball ended up with Michie, who scored on the left side.
- Michie, an Arlington native, capped the night off in style with a breakaway goal in the 89th minute.
The Numbers:
- ACU outshot Texas Southern 35-2.
- 22 of the 35 shots were placed on goal (62.9%).
- The Wildcats led 6-0 in corners earned.
- ACU held possession for 53% of the time.
- Junior
Erin Smith started in net, tallying two saves in all 90 minutes of action.
What's Next:
- The regular season begins Friday, Aug. 23 in Las Cruces, N.M. against the Aggies of New Mexico State. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. central time.
