ABILENE – Abilene Christian baseball (16-15, 5-7 Southland) is on the diamond four times this week starting with Tuesday's 6:30 p.m. rematch vs. the Falcons of Texas - Permian Basin. The Wildcats won last week's game at Crutcher Scott Field, 6-5, on senior
Derek Scott's go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning that scored
Dalton Dunn.
ACU is 15-1 vs. Permian Basin since 2006 with the lone defeat taking place in Odessa in 2011 while the Wildcats were still DII members of the Lone Star Conference.
Tonight's game will be video streamed on
ACUSports.com.
Following their midweek win over the Falcons, the Wildcats faced another longtime rival in Incarnate Word and took two-of-three games from the Cardinals, who came into the series tied for second place in the Southland Conference and riding high following a recent win over nationally ranked Texas.
ACU suffered a 14-inning defeat in game one (4-2) but bounced back with a walk off 6-5 win Saturday and dominated Sunday's contest from start-to-finish, 9-3, as
Jonathan Nicholson's 7.0 inning quality start was bolstered by a pair of home runs from battery mate
Luis Trevino.
Collin Chaney also had a great game, going 3-for-4 with a run and RBI in his first start of the season at designated hitter.
The Wildcats' series win vs. UIW was their first against the Cardinals since 2015 and snapped a four-game series losing streak. The two wins additionally tied last year's conference win total, and put the Wildcats' 3.0 games out of the eighth and final Southland Tournament spot with 18 games left to play.
ACU's next conference test comes this weekend at Houston Baptist against a Husky team that's also desperate to climb the Southland standings, as they're off to a 9-22 start (3-9). HBU this conference season has been swept by Stephen F. Austin, took two of three from Northwestern State, and lost the first two games at Corpus Christi before winning the finale, 14-0.
First pitch times at Husky Field are set for 2 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Each game will be live streamed and accompanied by real-time stats.
The Wildcats are 5-10 lifetime vs. the Huskies with their last series win (at Houston) coming in 2015.
