ABILENE – Abilene Christian women's tennis went 1-2 this past weekend during a three-match trip to Albuquerque. The Wildcats started competition with a 6-1 loss to New Mexico and 5-2 defeat against UTSA, but rebounded Sunday morning to beat former DII and Lone Star Conference rival Cameron, 6-1.
ACU swept the Aggies in doubles by scores of 6-0, 6-3 and 7-6 (4) before winning five of six singles competitions. Senior
Jordan Henry was victorious at the No. 5 position, 6-1, 6-1, over Pilar Juarena to finish the weekend with a perfect 3-0 record.
Henry, a native of Oklahoma City, defeated New Mexico's Natasha Munday, 7-5, 6-2, Friday afternoon, and then topped UTSA's Charleen Tiwari with a three-set comeback effort, 3-6, 7-5, 10-7.
Sophomore
Ileana Mocciola won her last two matches of the weekend to match Henry for the team lead in singles wins with four. The native Argentine scored her first win Saturday vs. UTSA's Sophie Omoworare, 6-0, 6-3, and today she toppled Cameron's Melany Opolz, 6-1, 6-2, in improving to 4-3 on the young season.
The Wildcats finished with an 8-10 singles record on the weekend and were .500 in doubles play at 4-4 with the team of
Sarah Eleanor Adams and
Nini Memishishi leading the way with a pair of No. 1 line victories over Cameron's Zhenia Shviadok and Alsia Savina, 7-6 (4), and New Mexico's Ruth Copas and Danielle Quevedo, 6-4.
Adams and Memishishi are 6-3 on the season.
The Wildcats return to action in two weekends when they travel to the U.S. Air Force Academy to play the Falcons and Stetson Hatters.
