ABILENE - Junior midfielder
Shay Johnson scored two goals in leading Team White to a 3-1 win over Team Purple Saturday night for the annual Purple/White Intrasquad match at Elmer Gray Stadium.
Team White scored a pair of goals in the first period with Johnson getting her team on the board in the 14th minute with a header off a cross from senior
Chelsea Reedy following a short corner kick from freshman
Alyssia Anuat. Four minutes later, White went up 2-0 when
Christina Arteaga finished a quick pass from
Caity Acosta to score from five yards out.
The teams went into their first break with White ahead 2-0.
Purple cracked the scoring column in the second period when sophomore
Brittney Harris found the ball out of a scrum following a corner kick from
Samantha Vestal and pushed it through the back of the net.
But in the 55th minute, White answered back when Johnson scored a second time. The junior received a pass from Acosta, and once again used her net to beat the goalkeeper from a couple feet outside the box.
The contest was broken into two 30-minute periods, and a final 20-minute frame. Purple's roster consisted of nine underclassmen and three upperclassmen, while White was a little more veteran-heavy with seven upperclassmen and five underclassmen. Twenty-five players saw the pitch, and together the sides utilized the valuable time to improve before the upcoming season.
All four goalkeepers played Saturday, with sophomore
Erin Smith leading the way with seven saves.
Elizabeth Folsom,
Rachel Johnson and
Haleigh Heath combined for eight stops.
The team now will use next week to prepare for its regular season opener on Thursday, Aug. 16 at Baylor. Kickoff in Waco is set for 7 p.m.
ACU's home opener is set for 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19 vs. UTEP.
