Box Score 2 CORPUS CHRISTI – The ACU Wildcats split a pair of games Friday afternoon in Southland Conference softball action, knocking off Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 8-0 in the first game before watching the Islanders turn the tables on them in a 7-0 Corpus Christi win in the second game.
The three-game series at Chapman Field in Corpus Christi will conclude Saturday at 11 a.m. After the split, ACU is now 11-17 overall and 5-6 in the Southland Conference, while the Islanders are 9-24-1 and 1-11.
Here's a look at each game of Saturday's doubleheader:
Game 1 (ACU 8, Corpus Christi 0) – ACU senior pitcher
Hannah Null got the start in the circle and the Islanders had no chance against her. She scattered six hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out five in a complete-game shutout as she improved to 9-9 on the season.
ACU, meanwhile, took advantage of five Corpus Christi errors to score eight runs on eight hits, including three runs in the top of the seventh inning to break the game open. The top of the Wildcats' lineup did most of the damage as
Donelle Johnson,
Braegan Hamilton and
Kayla Keeling each had a pair of hits in the Nos. 1, 2 and 4 spots in the lineup. Johnson, Keeling and
Brianna Barnhill each had RBIs for the Wildcats, who scored five other runs without the benefit of an RBI.
Game 2 (Corpus Christi 7, ACU 0) – The Islanders pounded out 11 hits against ACU pitchers
Shelby Craig and
Calie Burris en route to their first league victory. Corpus Christi shortstop Destiny Diaz was 2 for 3 with four RBI in the contest to lead her team to the win.
Corpus Christi scored a pair of runs in the first inning of Craig (0-4 on the season) and then tacked on five more in the third to make it a 7-0 contest. Candice Johnson (5-3) got the win for the Islanders, allowing just four hits and striking out six Wildcats.
Peyton Hedrick (2 for 3) and Johnson (2 for 3) had all of the Wildcats' hits.
