BEAUMONT – Abilene Christian's men's and women's teams each won their second Southland Conference matches of the season Monday at Lamar's Thompson Family Tennis Center, defeating the Cardinals by matching 5-2 scores.
The men's triumph was their 10th of season as they avenged their only league loss of the 2016 season, while the women snapped a three-match losing streak in improving to 8-6.
Each side won the doubles point followed by four singles victories.
The men's wins were attained at the No. 1 to 4 position by junior
Josh Sheehy, sophomores
Jonathan Sheehy and Niko Moceanu, and senior
Henry Adams with three of those wins coming in three sets.
Josh Sheehy rallied from a set down to defeat Benny Schweizer, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, and his younger brother did similar vs. Sebastian Santibanez, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 to remain tied for the team's best singles record at 11-5.
Adams then topped Logan Powell, 7-5, 6-4, for the match-clinching point, and Moceanu (ACU) defeated Arthur Serafim, 7-6 (7-1), 2-6, 6-2.
The women's match was 80 minutes shorter than the men's as it featured three straight-set wins for Wildcats
Lucile Pothier,
Whitney Williams and
Autumn Crossnoe, which resulted in a quick 4-0 lead. Crossnoe first completed her match at No. 5, defeating Milena Belianovich, 6-0, 6-1, and Williams followed with her 10th singles win of the spring, downing Sanja Jolic (LU-W) 6-3, 6-0.
Pothier doubled up Jasmin Buchta, 6-3, 6-3, for ACU's fourth point and freshman
Nini Memishishi then topped Kaela Di Giulio, 6-4, 2-6, 10-4. Memishishi and Williams each have 10 singles victories this spring.
The Wildcats' women's team returns to action Saturday with an 11 a.m. home dual vs. McNeese, while the men are off from competition until Wednesday, March 21 when they play host to neighborhood rivals McMurry (noon) and Hardin-Simmons (3:30 p.m.).
