Lamar's bats push Cardinals past Wildcats, 13-8

ABILENE -- Lamar first baseman Trey Silvers tied the school record for home runs in a game Saturday afternoon as he blasted three round-trippers in the Cardinals' 13-8 win over ACU in Southland Conference baseball action at Crutcher Scott Field.
Silvers hit a three-run home run in the first inning and solo shots in the second and ninth innings as he finisheed the day 3 for 5 with three runs scored and five RBI. His three home runs were part of five home-run day for the Cardinals, who also got a tw-run home run in the second inning from Robin Adames and a solo home run in the sixth inning from Cutter McDowell.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 10-25 on the season and 1-19 in Southland Conference play as they have lost 18 of their last 19 games and 17 straight in league play. Lamar, meanwhile, improves to 24-16 and 11-9 going into Sunday's 1 p.m. series finale.
The Cardinals jumped on top 3-0 on the three-run home run by Silvers in the first inning before the Wildcats rallied with five runs in the bottom of the first to take a 5-3 lead. Luis Trevino had an RBI single in front of a two-run single from Koby Claborn and a two-run double from Mark Pearson.
But the Cardinals responded with five runs of their own in the top of the second inning to take an 8-5 lead and tacked on another run in the third for a 9-5 lead and one more in the sixth to make it 10-5 and marking the 11th time in 20 conference games the Wildcats have allowed at least 10 runs in a game.
Lamar put the game away with three runs in the top of the ninth. ACU's other runs came on a two-run single by Russell Crippen in the sixth to make it a 10-7 game and an RBI groundout by Derek Scott in the eighth to cut it to 10-8.
Crippen and Claborn each had three hits and two RBI in the game, while Pearson was 1 for 2 with two RBI on the ground-rule double in the first inning.
