ABILENE – Abilene Christian women's tennis improved to 8-4 overall and 6-1 at home following Wednesday's 6-1 victory over the defending WAC champions from New Mexico State on the outdoor courts of the Eager Tennis Center. The Wildcats have won their last three duals vs. the Aggies dating back to 2014 by scores of 4-3, 5-2 and 6-1.
ACU today won the doubles point with victories coming from the No. 1 and 2 lines.
Whitney Williams and
Erin Walker defeated Rimpledeep Kaur and Marie-Pier Thiffault, 6-3, for their fourth win together this spring, and then
Lucile Pothier and
Sarah Eleanor Adams clinched the point with their 6-2 decision over Vanessa Valdez and Elizabeth Geronimo.
It did not take much longer for the Wildcats to clinch the match outright as their first three singles victories were all in three sets. Pothier put her team ahead 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 over Thiffault, and
Autumn Crossnoe – who was playing in her first dual since late January – crushed Gabrielle Joyce, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6 to make it a 3-0 game. Adams registered the match-clinching point with her 6-2, 6-1 win over Lindsay Harlas at No. 4 for her 10th win of the spring.
Adams remains tied with Williams and
Jordan Henry for most singles victories on the team as Williams beat Valdez at No. 2, 6-3, 7-5, and Henry rallied from a set down to beat Geronimo at No. 5, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6. Williams owns the team's longest current winning streak at seven games.
ACU returns to action Friday and Saturday with 1 p.m. duals scheduled against Southland Conference rivals Lamar and Sam Houston State. The Wildcats began their conference season last Sunday with a 4-3 loss at Central Arkansas.
