ABILENE – Abilene Christian women's tennis ran its winning streak to three matches following its 4-1 victory over Sam Houston State on the indoor courts of the Teague Events Center. The Wildcats have won eight of their last nine duals in improving to 10-4 on the spring (2-1 Southland), while the Bearkats slipped to 10-4 (1-2 Southland).
ACU is now 4-0 all-time vs. Sam Houston State after winning the doubles point in addition to the singles matches at No. 1, 3 and 4. Yesterday's hero vs. Lamar, junior
Whitney Williams, suffered the Wildcats' lone defeat as she fell to Ema Barkovic in three sets, 0-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Williams, however, was a winner once again in doubles with senior
Erin Walker as they quickly dispatched the Bearkat duo of Mila Milanovic and Carrie Casey, 6-1, and the No. 2 duo of
Sarah Eleanor Adams and
Lucile Pothier defeated Fabienne Gettwart and Khee Yen Wee, 6-2. The match at No. 3 was left unfinished and the Wildcats now own an overall doubles record of 36-22 (.621).
In singles, Pothier gave her side the lead for good after beating Wee in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3 for her sixth consecutive victory, and then Walker held on to beat Gettwart, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, at No. 1. Walker lost to Gettwart at the top line last season in Huntsville, Texas during ACU's 4-3 win over the Bearkats.
The match-clinching point was earned by freshman Adams, whose 6-4, 6-4 triumph at No. 4 over Casey provided her the team lead with 12 singles victories. Adams – who trailed in the second set, 4-1, before mounting her comeback – has now won her last three decisions and is 8-2 over her last 10 starts.
Interestingly, Adams' older brother, Henry, of ACU's men's tennis team also posted a dramatic second-set rally today as he dug his way out of a 5-0 hole to beat Guilherme Scarpelli of Idaho, 7-5, 7-5, for the match-clinching point in the Wildcats' 4-3 win.
ACU's No. 5 and 6 line players
Jordan Henry and
Autumn Crossnoe left their matches unfinished. Henry was down one set to Milanovic at No. 5, while Crossnoe was leading Caitlyn Mitchell, 6-3, 6-0, at the time the match was called.
The match was played indoors due to cool temperatures. Today's high topped out at 54 degrees.
The Wildcats return to action next weekend with a Saturday match at McNeese (11 a.m.) folllowed by a Sunday home dual vs. Nicholls at 11:44 a.m.
