The Wildcats (9-7, 3-1 Southland) trail the Cardinals in their all-time series, 4-1, since joining the Southland Conference in 2013-14 with the lone victory taking place in Abilene on Jan. 30 of last season. ACU won the game, 90-62, by shooting 52.5 from the field and knocking down 15 3-point attempts, but Lamar won the rematch five days later in Beaumont, 63-54, becoming the only Southland school to beat the Wildcats last season.
Alexis Mason scored a career-high 30 points vs. the Cardinals that night, but the Wildcats couldn't overcome poor shooting in the second and third quarters in which they combined for 14 points.
ACU also struggled mightily on offense to start Thursday's game vs. Stephen F. Austin as its 15 first-half points on 5-of-31 shooting (.161) set a season low. The Wildcats went into the break down 32-15 and recovered some in the fourth quarter to reduce a 21-point deficit all the way down to five points with 20 seconds remaining, but the Ladyjacks prevailed by making their final four free throws and getting stops on ACU's final two possessions.
SFA's victory kept them tied with Lamar for first place in the Southland Conference at 4-0, while the Wildcats fell into a tie for second place with McNeese at 3-1. ACU's loss also snapped its conference home winning streak at 14 games, as prior to Thursday night the Wildcats hadn't lost a Southland game at Moody Coliseum since February of 2015 when they fell 73-58 to Lamar.
Suzzy Dimba fouled out against the Ladyjacks but carried her team on offense by scoring 20 points for the second consecutive night to go along with a team-high nine rebounds and four assists. Her sister,
Lizzy Dimba, contributed 15 points to reach 999 for her career, and Mason knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to get within three of tying Ashley King's career record of 239. Mason, however, set the program's record for most 3-point attempts with 715.
