ABILENE – Abilene Christian soccer held on to defeat its old NCAA Division II rivals from Midwestern State, 2-1, in exhibition play Tuesday afternoon at Elmer Gray Stadium.
The contest, which was split into three 30-minute periods, served as a warm-up for Friday's 2016 season-opener vs. UTSA. That match kicks off at 7 p.m.
The Wildcats constantly peppered the Mustangs' net, ending period one with a 12-0 advantage in shots, but didn't hit paydirt until the 35th minute when senior team captain
Leslie Snider found a wide-open
Kate Seay, who fired a diagonal along the ground and past the outreached arm of goalkeeper Courtney Burnette.
ACU additionally earned eight corner kicks and cashed in on Seay's short corner taken in the 40th minute. With the wind blowing in from the east, Seay played a pass up to freshman Sam Vestal outside the 18-yard box, and then Vestal found the foot of classmate
Brooke Lenz inside the six for the redirection.
Midwestern State got on the board four minutes later when substitute Avery Lewis arced a contested shot over her defender and above the head of senior goalkeeper
Kelsey Dombrowski. Lewis' shot was MSU's first of the match and only attempt of the second period.
MSU pressed a bit more in the final period, finishing with four shots and two corners but nothing came close to serving as an equalizer. ACU blocked one of their shots and backup goalkeeper
Rachel Johnson made two saves in the final 44:35.
Senior
Natalie Throneberry led ACU with four of its 22 shots. Snider,
Chloe Fifer and
Sophie Standifer each finished with three shots as the Wildcats put eight of their attempts on frame.
