Guerrero medals in steeplechase; Wildcats qualify 17 for Sunday finals

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Abilene Christian's track and field teams totaled 13 points Saturday during the second day of competition at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships but are set up nicely for a big showing Sunday as 17 Wildcats qualified for finals in 10 events.
The ACU men performed especially well this afternoon in the sprints. Senior Deandre McBride started his day with a fifth-place personal record of 47.69 seconds in the 400-meter dash and later won his heat to qualify second overall in the 200m dash with a wind-aided mark of 21.19.
Senior Rosen Daniel will join McBride in each event as he posted times of 47.58 and 21.62. Daniel - a former Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year - qualified second in the 400m and fifth in the 200m.
Junior Corneil Lionel was the third Wildcat to qualify for the 200m finals with a seventh-place mark of 21.44, and earlier he qualified sixth in the 100m with a non-wind aided PR of 10.61.
The Wildcats will additionally have Sterlen Paul contest the finals of the 800m, plus senior Jeremy Tatham in the 110m hurdles and sophomore Lee-Andrew Bloomfield in the 400m hurdles.
The ACU women today were led by their middle-distance corps, which went 3-for-3 in both the 800m and 1500m. Junior Diana Garcia Munoz placed first in the 1500m prelims in 4:43.62 and snuck into the 800m finals with an eighth-place qualifying time of 2:16.55. She will be joined in the 1500m finals by teammates Aubrey Till and Michaela Hackett. Till, a freshman, qualified third with a time of 4:43.66, and Hackett was fourth in 4:44.62.
Representing ACU in the 800m alongside Garcia Munoz will be sixth-place qualifier Petrene Plummer (2:15.89) and senior Marina Guerrero (2:13.87), who closed today's showcase with a stellar third-place showing in the steeplechase.
Guerrero raced among the leaders for the entire race and was running second at the bell lap before taking third behind Stephen F. Austin's Shelby Pesek (10:43.86) and Katrina Fite (10:47.76). Guerrero completed the course in 10:54.16, which was only a few seconds slower than her third-place time from here last spring (10:51.93).
The only other Wildcat points scored today came from multi-athletes Luke Woods and Taylor Yantis. Woods missed the medal stand by one place, claiming fourth-place honors with 6,736 points in the decathlon, while Yantis place seventh in the heptathlon with 4,820 points.
In addition to the 10 individual track events on Sunday's slate, ACU can make up additional ground in the standings via its 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays, men's and women's discus, and the women's 5K where junior Alexandria Hackett will look to defend her conference title. Hackett won Friday's night's 10K with a meet record time of 34:47.79.
Elsewhere on the track today, senior Jessica James qualified sixth in the 400m prelims with a time of 55.96 and senior Kimone Green made it through to the finals of the 100m hurdles with her third-place prelim mark of 1:00.21.
James was third at this winter's indoor conference championship in 55.24, while Green was the winner in 54.64.
Each of ACU's teams head into Sunday well behind in the standings. The women are seventh with 21 points, 63 points behind the leaders from Sam Houston State. The men rank ninth with 11 points, 53 points behind first-place Northwestern State.
Men's and women's field events begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. Running events will start at 12 p.m. Sunday with the women's 100-meter dash taking place at 1:20 p.m. and the men's 100-meters happening at 1:30.
Team championship trophies and the meet's top male and female high-point scorer will be presented at approximately 4 p.m. Sunday at the conclusion of the final event, the men's 4x400-meter relay. All individual award presentations will take place immediately following the completion of each event.
Admission to the 2016 Southland Outdoor Track and Field Championships is $10 for a single-day pass and a youth single-day pass is $5. Students at Southland institutions who present a valid student ID receive free, one-day admission. For ticketing purposes, a youth is considered any child five years of age or younger.
