TUCSON, Ariz. — Bobby Dalbec had three hits and drove in three runs Wednesday night for Arizona as the Wildcats completed a two-game sweep of the ACU Wildcats with an 8-3 win in ACU's season finale at Hi Corbett Field.
ACU finishes its season at 16-37, while Arizona improves to 35-20. Arizona will play at Hawaii for three games before learning its NCAA regional tournament fate late Sunday evening.
ACU's Wildcats fell behind 4-0 in the third after Dalbec scored a run in the second and then doubled in two more in the third.
Trailing 4-0, ACU got back into the game in the top of the fourth inning when
Braxton Wilks walked and
Russell Crippen reached on an error by Arizona second baseman Cody Ramer.
Derek Scott then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position before
Heath Beasley was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Cameron Ming then entered the game in place of Arizona starting pitcher Rio Gomez and he struck out ACU freshman shortstop
Mark Pearson for the second out. Ming then faced ACU freshman first baseman
David Ruot and the two battled to a full count before Ruot lined a shot down the right field line to plate all three baserunners and cut the Arizona lead to 4-3.
But Arizona quickly answered with two runs in the fifth.
Senior righthander
Garrett deMeyere — bidding to improve his career record against Arizona to 3-0 — was lifted in the fifth inning after he gave up an RBI double to Dalbec and an RBI triple to freshman catcher Cesar Salazar.
In the sixth, deliver
Nick Palacios gave up a single and a walk before being lifted from the game in favor of
Aaron Mason with one out. With runners at second and third, Ryan Aguilar laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that allowed Louis Boyd to score from third. But Ramer — running hard from second — never stopped and he, too, scored on a two-RBI sacrifice bunt, pushing the Arizona lead to 8-3.
