ABILENE – The ACU Wildcats are back on the turf at Crutcher Scott Field this weekend for a three-game non-conference series against Southland Conference foe Lamar.
This is the second straight season the two Southland members will have played a non-conference series.
One of the added elements to Saturday's doubleheader is that the ACU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is partnering with the Students' Association to bring a tailgate and Hudson Wade memorial game to Crutcher Scott Field. Hudson is the son of Abilene Christian Schools president Kirk Wade and his wife, Laura, who passed away earlier this year after a battle against leukemia.
SAAC will be hosting a carnival that begins at 12:30 p.m. and will be free to kids. The carnival will feature inflatables, Nerf war, cotton candy, popcorn, dizzy bat games and more. SAAC is also asking everyone to wear white to the game for a "White Out" game. Also, Hudson's best friend, Keaton Allen, will throw out the first pitch prior to the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Wildcats enter Saturday's doubleheader at 10-14 on the season after Tuesday night's 3-2 win over Dallas Baptist in Abilene snapped a seven-game losing streak. Junior infielder
Aaron Draper dropped down a perfect squeeze bunt up the first base line to score
Willie Harris with the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
ACU will send RHP
Garrett deMeyere and LHP
Aaron Mason to the mound in Saturday's two games in starting assignments with senior RHP
Kyle Carroll going to the mound Sunday. The Wildcats are led offensively by senior catcher
Alex Copeland, who is hitting .302 with six RBI, while junior outfielder
Braxton Wilks leads the team with 13 RBI.
Lamar – which earlier this season beat then-No. 5 LSU – enters this weekend's series at 17-7 overall and coming off a 4-2 win Tuesday against Texas in Austin. The Cardinals pounded out 13 hits in the win and scored twice in the top of the ninth to break a 2-2 tie and grab the win.
The Cardinals have now won seven straight and are led offensively by Reid Russell, who is hitting .360 with eight home runs and 23 RBI. Jake Nash has also driven in 21 runs for Lamar.
Lamar's pitching rotation should be RHP Will Hibbs (4-1, 2.03 ERA) and RHP Billy Love (1-1, 2.28) on Saturday and RHP Jayson McKinney (1-0, 2.80) on Sunday.
