Women's tennis sweeps doubleheader from UTSA and St. Edward's

ABILENE - A Whitney Williams' victory at No. 5 singles clinched Abilene Christian's 4-3 win over UT San Antonio, and the Wildcats shutout St. Edward's 7-0 in the nightcap to complete a doubleheader sweep in their spring season home opener on the Teague Center indoor courts.

The Wildcats improved to 6-3 on the season, while the Roadrunners fell to 3-2 and the Hilltoppers dropped to 1-1 after starting their day with a 9-0 win at McMurry.

ACU won two of the first three points against UTSA and captured doubles thanks to consecutive 6-3 victories posted by the No. 1 and 2 duos of Williams and Erin Walker, and Lucile Pothier and Kaysie Hermsdorf.

Walker and Hermsdorf would go on to lose in singles at the top two spots, but in between defeats senior Nada Marjanovic earned the team's second point with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4 over Alena Shichkova. Marjanovic also won her game vs. St. Edward's to push her individual winning streak to six and lift her team-best record to 9-1.

Following Walker's three-set defeat that tied the score at 2-2, the Wildcats grabbed the lead for good starting with sophomore Lucile Pothier's 7-6, 6-3 win over Nicole Karaklis at No. 4, and then Williams hung on to beat Charlene Tiwari at No. 5, 7-6, 6-2, for her fifth singles victory of the spring.

St. Edward's is currently ranked 40th in NCAA DII and is one of the top-10 teams in its region, but the Hilltoppers couldn't get any closer than 6-4 in any of its nine-matches vs. ACU.

The Wildcats won all three doubles by identical 6-1 scores and continued rolling into singles as everyone captured a straight-set victory led by Walker at the top line. Pothier also won her match at No. 3, 6-0, 6-1, to join Marjanovic as ACU's lone double winners.

The Wildcats return to action on Valentine's Day, Sunday, Feb. 14 for a 12 p.m. match at Texas A&M.

The ACU men open their home season Friday at 3 p.m. for a twin bill vs. Tyler and Trinity.
