ABILENE - Abilene Christian softball Tuesday released its 2017 schedule, which will be competitive from start to finish as the Wildcats will face teams from 14 conferences, including NCAA Championship qualifiers from Arizona, Baylor, North Dakota State, Oklahoma State and Texas State.
ACU begins its fourth year as a NCAA DI member of the Southland Conference in San Marcos, Texas the weekend of Feb. 10-12 during which the Wildcats will meet Iowa, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas Tech in addition to the host Texas State Bobcats. Texas State represented the Sun Belt Conference in the NCAA Championships behind an overall record of 40-22.
ACU's tournament schedule also includes appearances in Tucson, Ariz., and Stillwater, Okla. The Wildcats will be on Arizona's campus the weekend of Feb. 17-19 along with Boston College, Ball State, North Dakota State and Drake, and close their tournament slate two weeks later at Oklahoma State with games against the Cowgirls, Tennessee Tech and Northern Iowa.
The Arizona Wildcats went 40-21 a year ago and won the Knoxville Regional over Tenneesse, Marist and Ohio State, but lost their Super Regional, 2-1, vs. fourth-seeded Auburn.
Oklahoma State and North Dakota State were eliminated during the regional rounds hosted by Athens, Ga., and Seattle, Wash., but still finished with impressive overall records of 32-26 and 39-15. North Dakota State went 17-0 last spring to win the Summit League.
ACU hosts its own tournament the weekend of Feb. 24-26 vs. the Big Sky's Northern Colorado and the SWAC's Prairie View A&M, and will later welcome Texas Tech on March 7 and North Texas on April 19 for single games staring at 6 p.m.
Southland Conference play begins at Poly Wells Field on March. 10 vs. Southeastern Louisiana. The Wildcats also will play host this season to Corpus Christi (March 31-April 1), Nicholls (April 7-8), Central Arkansas (April 28-29) and Stephen F. Austin (May 5-6).
The Nicholls Colonels and Northwestern State Lady Demons are both new to the Wildcats' Southland slate, replacing McNeese and Lamar. The McNeese Cowgirls are the defending Southland Conference regular-season and tournament champions, while the Cardinals placed fourth in the league last spring at 18-9 – one game behind the Wildcats, who were 26-21 overall and 19-8 vs. the league.
Nicholls was the Southland's runner-up at 21-5 and Northwestern State will be looking to rebound from a disappointing 10-17 season, which was good for eighth place in the 12-team league. The Wildcats visit the Lady Demons March 17 and 18 and will make additional Southland road trips to Houston Baptist (March 24-25), Incarnate Word (April 14-15), and Sam Houston State (April 21-22).
ACU's annual meeting with Baylor takes place Wednesday, March 29 in Waco. The Wildcats will then complete its three-game season-long series against the Red Raiders in Lubbock on Wednesday, April 5.
