ABILENE - Several members of the Abilene Christian track and field program begin competing Thursday for this weekend's running of the historic Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
Representing the Wildcats at Drake Stadium are runners Osei Allyene-Forte, Daniel Block, Devan Brown, Rosen Daniel, Johnathan Farquharson and Deandre McBride, plus discus thrower Kai Schmidt and sprint hurdler Lexus Williams.
Block, the Southland's indoor champion in the 800m, is making only his second outdoor appearance this weekend as he is entered in both Thursday's unseeded running of the 800m and Saturday's final. His outdoor PR in this event is 1:51.27, though he ran a 1:50.01 this past indoor campaign.
Block's competition at Drake will include competitors from Georgia, Mississippi, Arizona State, and Oklahoma State.
Farquharson and Williams are the only other Wildcats scheduled to run an individual event. Farquharson - the Southland's No. 1 runner in the 200m (20.68) and No. 4 competitor in the 100m (10.52) - will be in the third heat of the 100-meter dash, going head-to head against the likes of Texas Tech's Trevor Mackey and Nigel Bethel.
Farquharson's 100m prelim is slated to begin at 12:43 p.m. CT Friday, while the finals are set for Saturday at 2:12 p.m.
Farquharson also will be in the Wildcats' relay mix as ACU will have entries in the 400m, 800m and 1600m relays. ACU currently has the No. 5 Southland time in the 4x100m at 40.52 and its 4x400m relay is ranked second with a time of 3:10.60. ACU has yet to compete in a 4x200m relay this spring.
Williams is in the second of four heats of the 100m hurdles, where her competition will include four members of the nationally fifth-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks plus Nebraska's Melissa-Maree Farrington and sixth-ranked Michigan junior Cindy Ofili (12.98 second seed time).
Williams clocked a season-best 13.91 last week at Oklahoma's John Jacobs Invitational that pushed her to fourth on the Southland's performance list.
Prelims for the hurdles start Friday at 9:32 a.m. and the finals are Saturday at 2:18 p.m.
Schmidt will be the last Wildcat to appear this weekend as his discus competition won't commence until Saturday at 9 a.m. He is in the second of two flights and his opposition will include six-time All-America and 2016 Olympic hopeful Russ Winger and Chase Madison, a former SEC discus champion from Kentucky.
A freshman, Schmidt enters this week with a PR of 183 feet-11 inches in the discus that has him ranked second to Southeastern Louisiana's Brett Olson (184-9).
