Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored once in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday evening as the Islanders knocked off ACU, 5-4, in the first game of a Southland Conference baseball series between the two teams at Chapman Field.
The Wildcats trailed 4-3 before tying the game in the top of the ninth on a one-out squeeze bunt by
Heath Beasley that scored
Kyle Carroll. But the Islanders came back in the bottom of the ninth against ACU closer
Kevin Sheets to plate the game-winning run on a one-out RBI single by Kyle Danford.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 8-22 overall and 6-7 in the Southland Conference, while the Islanders improve to 15-15 overall and 5-8 in the league. The Islanders – who swept the Wildcats last year in a three-game series in Abilene – are now 4-0 all-time against the Wildcats.
ACU is now 2-7 on the season in one-run games this season and have lost its last two one-run games: 4-3 last Monday against No. 2 TCU and Friday night's 5-4 loss to the Islanders.
Trailing 1-0, the Wildcats got the game tied in the top of the third when
Aaron Draper doubled to right-centerfield with one out and scored when
Colton Hall followed with a triple down the right field line. Eager then reached on an error by the Corpus Christi second baseman, allowing Hall to score to give the Wildcats the lead.
Corpus Christi tied the score in the bottom of the third before ACU regained a 3-2 lead in the fifth when Eager drove in Draper on an RBI groundout. The Islanders, however, answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning.
That led to the ninth inning, which saw the Wildcats tie it in the top of the frame and the Islanders win it in the bottom of the inning.
Sheets took the loss to fall to 0-1 for the Wildcats. ACU starting pitcher
Garrett deMeyere went five innings, giving up seven hits and four runs while striking out three Islanders.
