HOUSTON – The ACU Wildcats will return to Southland Conference action this weekend at Husky Field with a three-game Easter weekend series against Houston Baptist.
Because of the holiday weekend, the series will get started with a 2 p.m. game Thursday, followed by a 2 p.m. game Saturday and a 1 p.m. series finale on Saturday. All of the games can be seen and heard at hbuhuskies.com.
The Wildcats – who knocked off Lamar, 5-4, last Sunday – lost to No. 13 Dallas Baptist, 12-1, Tuesday night and enter the series at 6-19 overall and 4-5 in Southland play. The Huskies, meanwhile, have won of their last seven games and enter the series at 15-12 overall and 6-3 in the Southland, which is good for fourth place in the league.
ACU continues to be led by senior first baseman
Tyler Eager, who is hitting .313 on the season with no home runs and 15 RBI.
Russell Crippen (hitting .253 on the season) and
Alex Copeland (hitting . 247) have 10 RBI each for a Wildcat team that enters the series hitting just .236 as a team and having scored just 88 runs in 25 games (3.52 runs per game).
Righthander
Garrett deMeyere (2-3, 4.45 ERA) will get the start on the mound Thursday, followed by left-hander
Aaron Mason (0-4, 7.23 ERA) on Friday and freshman right-hander
Drew Hanson (0-0, 3.38 ERA) on Saturday.
The Huskies are hitting .278 as a team, led by Zach Nehrir, who is hitting .363 with 19 RBI. Greg Espinosa hit .333 with seven RBI, while Curtis Jones is hitting .320 with 10 home runs. Samm Wiggins is the Huskies' top power hitter with three home runs and 16 RBI to go along with a .289 batting average.
The Wildcats should see starting pitchers Taylor Wright (5-2, 1.99 ERA), Curtis Jones (2-3, 2.72 ERA) and Matthew McCollough (5-1, 2.83 ERA) in some order.
After the weekend series against Houston Baptist, the Wildcats will be at home at Crutcher Scott Field on Monday (April 6) for a 6:30 p.m. game against defending Big 12 champion and 2014 College World Series participant TCU.
