Wildcats' season comes to end in loss at Corpus

CORPUS CHRISTI – A frustrating 2014-15 season came to an end Saturday afternoon on the Texas Gulf Coast as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's defense put the clamps on ACU, holding the Wildcats to their lowest single-game point total in almost 70 years as the Islanders won going away, 58-27, at the American Bank Center.
The loss ends ACU's season at 10-21 overall and 4-14 in Southland Conference play, while Corpus Christi enters next week's Southland Conference Post-Season Tournament at 18-12 and 13-5. The Islanders will be the No. 3 seed in the tournament behind Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State and will earn a first-round bye.
For ACU, the 27 points is their lowest single-game point total since a 30-26 loss to McMurry in the middle of the 1945-46 season. The Wildcats hit just 9 of 48 shots from the floor (18.8 percent), including just 2 of 20 from 3-point range (10.0 percent).
ACU only scored 11 points in the first half, hitting just 5 of 22 shots (1 of 8 from 3-point range), and trailed 26-11 at the half. The Wildcats' defensive effort wasn't bad as the Islanders scored just 58 points and only shot 43.2 percent from the floor (19 of 44).
For ACU, Austin Cooke led the way with nine points and nine rebounds, while Harrison Hawkins had seven points off the bench.
Corpus Christi point guard John Jordan scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds to become the only active player in Division I with at least 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists in his career. Jordan dished out six assists as well, and finished the contest with exactly 1,500 points and 500 rebounds to go along with his 630 assists in his four years.
ACU actually led 7-6 early in the game, but at that point the Islanders' defense took over, holding the Wildcats scoreless for a 9:35 stretch starting with 15:04 left in the first half to take a 19-7 lead. The Wildcats would never threaten after that point.
