AUSTIN
– Junior Luke Woods and sophomore Taylor Yantis each won their respective multi-event championships Friday at the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Texas State.

Woods, who was seventh in decathlon here as a freshman and third as a junior, won his first collegiate decathlon title today with 6,710 points after claiming top honors in four of the remaining five events.

The Houston native and 2012 graduate of Northland Christian High School began the second day of competition with victories in the 110m hurdles (15.17 seconds), discus (113 feet-1 inch), pole vault (13-09.25) and javelin (158-1). He then finished fourth out of eight competitors (including freshman teammate Wyatt French) in the 1500m run with a time of 4:50.79.

Woods and French tied for first place in the pole vault as each reached a height of 13-09.25. For Woods, this effort served as a personal best.

French, a native of Rockwall, Texas, began this morning 86 points ahead of Woods, but eventually settled for runner-up honors with 6,229 points. Today he was fifth in the hurdles (17.40), third in the discus (100-8), fourth in the javelin (126-5) and sixth in the 1500m (5:09.07).

Placing a distant third was Ryan Haese of Incarnate Word, who totaled 6,055 points.

Competing in her second straight Bobcat Invitational Heptathlon, Yantis scored 168 more points over last year's total of 4,570 to finish with a personal record of 4,738 points. The Phoenix, Ariz., native won three of four events Thursday and today she followed up a second-place PR distance of 17-2 in the long jump with wins in the javelin (114-10) and 800m (2:32.41).

Second-place in the heptathlon went to Jada Curbeam of Prairie View (4451) and third-place honors earned by UIW's Catherine Reed (4051).

In Austin tonight ACU grabbed a pair of top-10 finishes in the relays during today's running of the 88th running of the Texas Relays, but the Wildcats failed to advance to Saturday's finals in four other events at Myers Stadium on the campus of University of Texas.

The Wildcat men's team placed ninth in the sprint medley relay in 3:21.57, and the women's team took the eighth spot in the distance medley relay in 11:46.04.

In morning preliminary events, the men's 4x400-meter relay team ran 3:10.76, Johnathan Farquharson ran 10.52 (-0.1) in the 100 meters, Jeremy Tatham turned in 15.24 (-0.2) for the men's 110 hurdles, and Lexus Williams finished in 14.48 (-0.1) for the women's 100 hurdles.

Farquharson found himself in the featured prelim of the men's 100, racing against Baylor sophomore Trayvon Bromell, NCAA champion who set a stadium record here last year in 10.01. Bromell dominated the field here Friday with 10.02 in the 10th of 12 heats to lead Saturday's finalists.

Twelve men ran better than Farquharson, and the top nine advanced to Saturday's final. No Southland Conference rival ran better than the ACU junior in the 100 prelims here.

The men's 4x400 team was third in its heat, but its 3:10.76 (the fifth-fastest time in ACU history) was only the 14th best time overall so the Wildcats failed to advance.

Texas State won ACU's heat in 3:08.67, and Clemson had the fastest time with 3:07.82 from the third of six heats. Ten teams dipped under 3:10, the top nine advanced to Saturday's collegiate final, and Stephen F. Austin State (3:08.51) was the only Southland Conference team to top ACU.

Rosen Daniel ran 46.9 on the third lap to pace the Wildcats. Osei Allyene-Forte started with 48.4, and ACU followed with Devan Brown (47.4), Daniel and newcomer Deandre McBride (48.1).

In the men's sprint medley, a two-section final, Farquharson (20.9 from the blocks) and McBride (21.0) ran the 200s, Daniel ran the 400 in a quick 45.8, and Daniel Block finished with 1:53.9 for the anchor 800.

Block briefly led the race before fading in the final 200 meters to be overtaken by SLC rival Sam Houston State (3:17.79) and Utah State (3:21.19). Block's conditioning and training have been hampered by a recent injury.

In the women's distance medley relay, the Wildcats' opening 1,200 was completed in 3:33.2 by Diana Garcia Munoz, and she was followed by Petrene Plummer with 58.8 for 400 meters, Isabella Gutierrez with 2:17.8 for 800 meters and Alexandria Hackett with 4:56.3 for 1,600 meters as ACU never challenged for the lead.

ACU's performances this weekend in Austin conclude Saturday with a noontime running of the 4x200m relay, which features Devan Brown, Farquharson, McBride and Daniel.

The remaining Wildcats compete throughout Saturday at Texas State. The final day of the Bobcat Invitational starts at 9 a.m. with the women's javelin and concludes at 5 p.m. with the men's 4x400m relay.

ACU is scheduled to compete in Lubbock next weekend before entertaining TCU and Texas Tech in the first meet at the new Elmer J. Gray Stadium on Saturday, April 11.
