ABILENE - Abilene Christian volleyball reaches the conclusion of its 2014 campaign this week by playing host to two of the Southland Conference's most dominant teams in Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State.
Winners of 14-consecutive Southland matches, the first-place Ladyjacks (21-7, 14-0 SLC) come to Moody Coliseum for a 7 p.m. match Thursday (Koji Night), while the fifth-place Lady Demons (11-16, 8-6 SLC) are in town for Saturday's Senior Day contest at 2 p.m. Seniors Neely Borger, Rachel Riley and Taylor Nix will be recognized for their dedication to the program by their coaches, families and teammates in a pregame ceremony.
Both of this week's rematches also will have a video stream accompanied by live statistics. The Wildcats last met these teams the first weekend of October and dropped a five-set thriller at Northwestern State before being swept by Stephen F. Austin.
Lately, however, the Wildcats (6-22, 4-10 SLC) have seen their fortunes change against the conference, winning four of their last six. ACU swept a weekend from New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana near the end of October, and accomplished the same last week after defeating McNeese and Nichols by matching 3-1 scores.
Junior outside hitter Jennifer Loerch and Borger, a middle blocker, each earned honorable mention Player of the Week status from the conference for their offensive and defensive contributions vs. the Cowgirls and Colonels.
Loerch contributed 35.5 points through both matches. She began the week with 18.5 points on 16 kills, an ace and 1.5 blocks vs. the Cowgirls, and had 15 kills and 2.0 blocks vs. the Colonels. Her four block assists against Nicholls tied a season high as the Wildcats recorded their third-highest block total of 2014.
Borger played a role in 15 of her team's 30.0 blocks last weekend. She also contributed 11 kills and two aces to finish with 22.0 points. Her eight kills and 17 attempts vs. Nicholls were both season highs for a four-set match, while her eight blocks were one shy from tying her season high of nine vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Additionally, ACU's 16.0 blocks vs. the Cowgirls and 14.0 vs. the Colonels were the team's second and third highest single-match totals this season. The Wildcats had 18.0 in a five-set match vs. Central Arkansas on Sept. 25.
Loerch enters the week ranked fifth in the Southland with 3.70 kills per set, while Mercier ranks fifth in blocks with 1.06 per set. Mercier was part of 15.0 blocks (1 solo) last weekend.
Junior setter Sarah Siemens returned to the top 10 in assists this week with 6.79 per set and junior Madison Hoover recorded 15 digs Saturday - her first match in close to a month - to move into ninth with 3.85 digs per set.
