ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Abilene Christian volleyball team completed its two-day run at the Lobo Invitational with an impressive 3-1 victory over Towson – a match in which all four sets were decided by three points or less.
The Wildcats (4-4) lost the first game, 25-22, but then captured games two, three and four by scores of 25-22, 30-28 and 26-24.
Sophomore middle blocker Corrie Reeder was one of four Wildcats to finish the match with 10-or-more kills and delivered the final two points of the fourth set off assists from classmate Sarah Siemens, who totaled 46 helpers overall.
Outside hitter Jennie Loerch led all players tonight with 15 kills and made the all-tournament team, while both Lexi Mercier and Neely Borger each recorded 10. Mercier and Borger also played a role in all seven of the Wildcats' blocks.
Mercier alone had one solo block and four block assists in finishing with 13.0 points.
The team also spread the wealth in the digs category as five Wildcats reached double figures led by Caley Johnson's 17.
After falling short in the first set, ACU led from wire-to-wire in capturing game two and then went back-and-forth all the way with Towson (4-8) in game three as the two sides encountered 16 tie scores and six lead changes.
Towson grabbed a third-set lead of 26-25, but then lost possession on a Lindsay Flaherty service error - one of a whopping 14 for the Tigers. The two sides were then deadlocked at 27-27 and 28-28 before Loerch delivered the final two points on back-to-back kills.
The Wildcats trailed early in game four by scores of 4-1 and 15-9, but quietly started to make a comeback after falling behind by five points at 20-15. An attack error by Victoria Williams trimmed the Wildcat deficit to four points and then with Borger on the serve, ACU rattled off four consecutive points to tie the score at 21-21.
Reeder would give the Wildcats their first lead at 23-22, but then Towson came back to tie the score again at 23-23 on a kill from Haley Pa'akaula and at 24-24 attack error by Mercier. Reeder brought the lead back to ACU with her 12th kill and finished the match for good with her 13th.
Towson hit .188 for the match, but was victimized by more than 40 errors. Twenty-four of its errors came on the attack, three on the block, five were reception miscues and 14 came from the service line.
Victoria Williams led the Tigers in kills with 13.
The Wildcats begin their inaugural season in the Southland Conference this Thursday and Saturday with matches at Central Arkansas and Oral Roberts.
