Wildcats looking for 10th title in final LSC Tournament appearance

FORT WORTH – The fifth-ranked ACU Wildcats will try to win their first Lone Star Conference men's golf championship since 2010 this week as they tee off in the tournament Monday morning at The Golf Club at Champion Circle.
The Wildcats face a tough field that includes No. 23 Midwestern State and No. 24 Cameron, which is the tournament's defending champion. Senior Alex Carpenter, who on Sunday night was named the league's Player of the Year for the fourth straight year, will try to win his third league title since his freshman year in 2010.
Carpenter shared the title with teammate Cyril Bouniol in 2010 as they led the Wildcats to the team title. Carpenter then won the title outright last year as a junior. He is the favorite to win the individual title and collect his 21st collegiate victory, which would extend what is believed to be the NCAA record for career collegiate victories.
The tournament will begin Monday with 36 holes on the par-72, 7,005-yard course and will conclude with 18 holes Tuesday. The top five individuals and ties will be named all-tournament.
Because of injuries, the Wildcats won't be playing with their full roster. Junior Trey Sullivan won't play and Corin Renner is only at about 50 percent. Carpenter and Renner will be joined by Luke Carpenter, Morgan Johnson and Ian Evans in the Wildcats' five-man lineup.
Each of the eight teams in the field will be bidding to the reach the NCAA Division II South Central / West Super Regional, which will be played May 6-8 at The Home Course in Dupont, Wash. The NCAA Division II national tournament will be played May 19-24 at the Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa.
This is ACU's final appearance in the LSC championship tournament before moving to NCAA Division I affiliation and the Southland Conference on July 1, 2013. The Wildcats have won nine LSC men's golf tournament titles in their LSC history.
