FORT WORTH, Texas – Sophomore Corbin Renner birdied five holes Tuesday and recorded the Lone Star Conference Championship's lowest round at 5-under-par 67 to place second among the 30 competitors here at The Golf Club at Champions Circle.
Renner's third-round performance moved him three places up the leaderboard as he finished the two-day competition at even-par 216, but it wasn't quite enough to catch leader Santiago Gomez of 23rd-ranked Midwestern State, which today claimed its first conference team title with a score of 10-over 874.
No. 6 Abilene Christian, meanwhile, finished as runner-ups for the second straight year at 39-over 903.
Gomez, who started the tournament tied for third place at 1-over 73, quickly distanced himself from the pack over the last two rounds. He went into this morning's competition five strokes ahead of ACU's top-ranked all-America Alex Carpenter, but a second-straight round of 4-under 68 helped him claim the individual championship by a comfortable margin (7-under 209).
Gomez bogeyed four times during his first round, however, he would only do that twice more through rounds two and three while carding 10 birdies.
Carpenter, the defending LSC champion, started his morning with seven consecutive pars and then bogeyed four of the next nine holes before finishing the 18th hole (par 5) with a birdie. His third-round score of 3-over 75 dropped him from second to fifth overall at 5-over 221, thus snapping his tournament-winning streak at four.
Renner, who has four top-five showings this season, overcame a difficult first round on Monday, in which he shot a 6-over 78, with a second-round score of 1-under 71. After recording a double bogey on the ninth hole (par 4) of round two, last year's LSC Freshman of the Year would bogey only once more over the next 27 holes while posting eight birdies.
Midwestern State's Derek Oland (1-over 217) and Jeremy LeGuen (4-over 220) each kept pace with their teammate Gomez today as both fired a 3-under 69 to place third and fourth, respectively.
Oland birdied his final two holes to get within a stroke of Renner for second, while LeGuen birdied four times along the back nine to pass Carpenter.
Midwestern State's No. 4 golfer, Antonio Herran, tied ACU's Luke Carpenter for 14th place at 15-over 231.
Rounding out the team standings were No. 24 Cameron (51-over 915), Texas A&M-Commerce (60-over 924), West Texas A&M (63-over 927) and Incarnate Word (65-over 929).
Next up for the Wildcats is the NCAA D-II South Central/West Super Regional Championship, which is scheduled for the weekend of May 6 to 8 at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash. ACU won its most recent regional championship in 2011, but placed 10th a year ago in Jefferson City, Mo.
When the South Central region was paired with the Midwest region last spring, four LSC golf teams were selected to play in the 54-hole super regional: ACU, Cameron, Midwestern State and West Texas A&M.
The NCAA is expected to announce its regional selections during the last week of April.
