Back-to-back doubles lift Wildcats over Knights

ABILENE - Back-to-back doubles by Abilene Christian's Seth Spivey and Tyler Eager in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Wildcats over visting Bellarmine Friday, 4-2.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Spivey knocked in the go-ahead run with a double deep down the left field line as Ty Taylor scored from first base. Eager followed suit with a double down the line that scored Spivey to give the Wildcats a 4-2 advantage.

ACU improved to 11-7 on the season while the Knights fell to 3-6.

BU took the early lead with a run in the top of the second, but the home team quickly tied the score at one run apiece in the bottom of the frame when a Spivey single to center scored Taylor.

The Knights took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth after the visitors used small ball to move the leadoff batter around to score on a bunt by Michael Morrissette. However, ACU tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Taylor singled to center to push Kyle Conwell across the plate.

Wildcat closer Brady Rodriguez, who recorded his third save of the season, allowed things to get interesting in the top of the ninth, but with two runners on and two outs, the junior got a fly ball to left field to end the game.

Jordon Herrera pitched the first eight innings and improved to 5-1 on the season with the victory while Austin Warner took the loss for the Knights.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Saturday at noon.
