LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Competing together for only the second time this spring, Abilene Christian's twin-sister tandem of Julia and
Laura Mongin Thursday defeated the nation's No. 1 doubles team of Barbora Krtickova and Aleksndra Filipovski, 8-4, as part of an 8-1 loss to Armstrong Atlantic at the Darling Tennis Center.
The loss dropped the third-ranked Wildcats to 12-5, while the defending national champion and top-ranked Pirates remain unbeaten at 14-0.
Even though the final score may have indicated a blowout victory for Armstrong, many of the individual sets and points were fiercely contested, including the ones at No. 4 singles where freshman
Kaysie Hermsdorf pushed the nation's No. 33 player Clara Perez to a third set before ultimately bowing, 4-6, 6-2, 10-3.
Hermsdorf and her No. 3 doubles partner, sophomore
Brittney Reed, also came close to winning their match, but slipped down the stretch and fell, 9-7, to Perez and Vukovic.
In the top half of the singles lineup, No. 5
Julia Mongin nearly extended her match to three sets vs. No. 8 Filipovski before losing the second set 7-5, and at No. 3, her sister, Laura, lost 6-3, 6-4 to No. 14 Marlen Hacke.
The nation's No. 2 player Barbora Krtickova, meanwhile, defeated
Micah Hermsdorf at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
At No. 5, 13th-ranked Olga Kalodzitsa defeated senior
Hannah Kelley 6-1, 6-3, and at No. 6, Vukovic battled past
Emily Conrad, 6-3, 6-3.
The Wildcats return to action next Wednesday, March 20 for a doubleheader in Wichita Falls, Texas vs. North Central Texas College and Lone Star Conference rival Midwestern State.
