LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Kirill Sinitsyn's three-set win over Abilene Christian senior Hans Hach sent the No. 12 Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific to a 5-4 victory against the No. 14 Wildcats Wednesday afternoon at the Darling Tennis Center.
The loss was ACU's third one-point defeat of the season, dropping its win-loss record to 10-8, while Fresno Pacific improved to 10-5.
Hach and teammate Guilherme Gesser got the best of Sinitsyn and his partner Kyle Rowe earlier at No. 1 doubles, winning 8-6, but Hach couldn't quite duplicate that success in singles, falling 7-6, 6-2, 7-5. The loss was Hach's second straight after starting the year 11-2.
ACU started singles trailing 2-1 after both its No. 2 and 3 doubles teams both lost; however, the Wildcats rallied to take a 3-2 lead following straight-set wins at No. 5 and 6 from Borja Cortes and Alfredo Desiati.
Desiati won his match, 6-0, 6-0, over No. 48 John Karlman, and Cortes took his match at No. 5 from Stefan Loop, 6-0, 6-4.
Fresno Pacific won the next two matches at No. 3 and 4 to regain the one-point lead at 4-3 as Rowe held off Nicklas Wingord in three sets and Michael Tymkiw twice edged Jason Proctor, 6-4, 6-4.
Gesser kept the Wildcats alive and tied the score at 4-4 after coming back from a set down to beat Amarit Sanchez at No. 2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Wildcats finish their stay in Las Vegas with a Thursday morning match vs. the top-ranked defending national champions from Armstrong Atlantic.
