ABILENE - After finishing this week's final exams, Abilene Christian's women's basketball team will head north to Tulsa for a 2 p.m. game Saturday vs. the 3-3 Golden Hurricane at the Reynolds Center.
The ACU and Tulsa game is the first between the schools and will be broadcast back in the Key City on 98.1 FM-The Ticket and via the ACU Sports portal provided by Stretch Internet. TulsaHurricane.com also has links available for live video and stats.
Both teams were to have played Sunday afternoon, but each game was postponed due to hazardous driving conditions that stretched across the South Central plains. Icy roads kept the Wildcats from going to UT-San Antonio, and prevented Arkansas-Little Rock from driving west to Tulsa.
ACU's game at UTSA was rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 4, at 4 p.m., and will be the Wildcats last non-conference test before the start of Southland Conference play.
The Wildcats' last game was a 92-64 smashing of Texas A&M-Commerce on Dec. 3 during ACU's third-annual Christmas Slam. ACU out-rebounded the Lady Lions, 43-31, behind a 15-point, 11-rebound effort by freshman forward Suzzy Dimba, which was her third double-double of the season. The Wildcats also hit 14 of 18 (77.8 percent) buckets from the charity stripe and shot .531 (34-64) from the field led by freshman Alexis Mason, who scored a career high 26 points.
Mason scored 16 of her points in the first half as she hit all seven of her shots from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers. She hit her first shot of the second half to make her a perfect 8 of 8 from the field before finally missing her first shot of the night at the 18:26 mark. She finished the game 10 of 13 from the field (3 of 5 from 3-point range) and 3 of 4 from the free throw line and she added six rebounds and two assists in 31 minutes.
The Golden Hurricane, meanwhile, is looking to snap a two-game losing streak. Sophomore Ashley Clark has a team-leading 14.3 points per game, followed by Kelsee Grovey (9.3) and Mariah Turner (7.3). Clark also has a team-best 6.8 rebounds per game, while Grovey has 22 assists, and Stevi Parker has 13 steals and four blocks.
Even as the defending Conference USA Champions and 2013 NCAA Tournament qualifiers, Tulsa was picked to finish ninth in the 2013-14 C-USA Preseason Coaches Poll. The Golden Hurricane welcomed seven freshman to their squad of seven returning letterwinners that includes three returning starters. Grovey is Tulsa's leading returning scorer at 10.5 points per game, while Loren McDaniel is the leading returning rebounder at 6.7 rebounds per contest.
Tuesday Doubleheader Giveaways
Several holiday-themed gifts will be presented to fans before and during ACU's Tuesday night doubleheader at Moody Coliseum. Games begin at 5:30 p.m. with the women's team taking on Texas Wesleyan followed by the men's team vs. Bacone College.
The first 250 fans in attendance will receive candy canes, and during each game there will be opportunities to win DVDs of 'A Christmas Carol', 'Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer' and 'Frosty the Snow Man.'
