SOUTHLAKE, Texas - The sixth-ranked Abilene Christian women's tennis team continued to roll over the competition Friday night at the Lone Star Conference Championship, this time blanking fourth-seeded Tarleton State, 5-0, in the semifinal round at the Southlake Tennis Center.
The victory lifted the Wildcats' season mark to 22-3 and put them back in the LSC Championship title match, where they'll face second-seed Cameron Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
ACU's shutout was its 13th of the spring as it also improved to 14-0 against NCAA Division II schools, all of which - up until tonight - lost to the Wildcats by either an 8-1 or 9-0 margin.
The Wildcats began play with its 14th doubles sweep with the nationally ranked duo of
Micah Hermsdorf and
Hannah Kelley leading the way with an 8-4 victory at the No. 1 position vs. Karla Martinez and Melanie Barnes.
At No. 2 doubles, the tandem of
Laura Mongin and
Brittney Reed squashed Alicia Perez and Makenzie Mitchell, 8-1, and at No. 3,
Julia Mongin and
Madelyn Walker silenced Silvia Nieva-Garcia and Kayla Deatherage, 8-2.
With three points in their back pocket, all the Wildcats had left to do was win two additional singles matches to clinch the team victory. Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year
Brittney Reed and Kelley were the first the finish, as they defeated their opponents, 6-1, 6-0, and 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 3 and 6 positions, respectively. Reed's win was her team-best 22nd of the year.
The remaining four singles matches were left unfinished.
